The last time, we were on the highway at night, pouring rain and the alternator fried. I have, over time replaced the battery a couple of times. I also find that if one of them burns out I need to change it soon or the other might burn out as well. I appreciate it!Headlights? I'm probably about the same as you, about twice a year. Thanks to everyone that has posted in this thread, and thanks Quicksilver for the info on the Ac compressor. For 10 years of solid service I can't really complain about the afore mentioned problems, but living in Arizona I have to have Ac. Beyond that everything is working great and i still get 30+ mpg on average. I'm on my 3rd water pump and the power door locks don't work on the drivers side front door. I also just had to replace the crankshaft sensor because that took a dump. Have you had any problems with blowing out headlight bulbs? I blow a headlight bulb about twice a year. It's been hella reliable for me for the past 9, but this last year I have run into some problems. Short cycling is not an uncommon occurrence, but it needs to be addressed when it happens. What causes the Mazda A/C unit to short cycle? Sometimes a malfunctioning unit can be repaired simply by replacing this part. The vehicles clutch serves this function by turning it off and on as needed, and thus is one of the most important parts of the system. Without this, it would quickly freeze up and stop working. In order to operate correctly, the compression unit must be switched on and off. It is a critical component of the car’s air conditioning system because it controls the operation of the compressor. Located within the engine near the compressor of the Mazda Protege, is the clutch. Sometimes it will seize and fail to regulate the activity of the compressor. The compressor clutch fails to move during operation. The engine makes loud noises when the air conditioning is turned on.The air being distributed within the cabin of the Mazda Protege sedan is noticeably warmer than usual. There are some warning signs that indicate the need for a replacement in your Protege, including: Just as with almost any other car parts, continued use of this component of your Mazda air conditioning system will cause it to eventually wear out.
